Remote access

I would like to be able to access my home computer from my cottage. My home machine is on rogers cable, and I have a netgear 4 port router hooked up to my cable modem.

The computer at my cottage would be a notebook using a dialup connection.

Both would have Win2K as operating systems, and I would like to use PC anywhere.

Can I do this and how do I set it up?

Any info or links to good sites would be appreciated.

Install PC Anywhere on both machines. Set up the one at home as a host, and forward the 2 required ports in the router (as I remember, 5631 TCP and 5632 UDP) to the local IP (the one the router assigns, or you assign) of the machine. Set your remote to connect using TCP/IP to the WAN IP address (the one Rogers assigns) of your router and dial up an ISP with the notebook.

Thanks so much for that reply GLC. I can do that stuff no problems.
But, since rogers had gone to dynamic addressing, how do I know what IP address they have assigned my router at the time I want to access it?

Normally, even dynamic cable IP's don't change unless the modem and/or router is turned off and back on - and the shortest lease I've seen is 24 hours anyway, I've seen as long as a week. If you do have a problem with your IP changing frequently, you may be able to use a dynamic DNS service and connect to the resolvable name instead of the IP address.

afaik several netgear routers come with firmware to automatically update a dyndns.org account whenever your IP changes. this could be useful in keeping a constant reference to your pc if the IP changes. you can set it up by using the web based interface.

Thanks for that info about the router I will look into it to see if my router is capable of doing that.

I think I saw that option in a D-Link 704P I set up the other day.
