I just purchased a expensive speaker system to hear DVDs, music and games but the mobo has onboard sound and its a VIA VT1612A AC'97 Audio Codec, I checked with the manufacturer of the mobo and read the specs and didn't find anything og dolby digital 5.1. Do I need a sound card????

Yes sir,
You will need to disable the onboard sound in the BIOS and then install a 5.1 sound card, there are many of them on the market, perhaps the best known being Sound Blaster Audigy.
I'll leave it to the other guys to make recommendations as since owning a Creative Labs (Sound Blaster)128, many moons ago I have stuck with onboard as it suits my needs.

I'll get a sound card I just wanted to be sure. I won't be able to get Creative Labs Sound Blaster becuase I've heard it has problems with VIA onboard sound. Let me know what you guys think on this card I'm interested in, its a Maya 5.1 Surround Sound Audio Card.
If you don't want to get Creative, I still like the TB Santa Cruz - it's getting old but it's proven.

Whoever said that Creative Labs has problems with a onboard sound VIA is crap. I successfully installed the Sound Blaster Live 5.1 on and it kicks ass!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I've successfully installed a Live Value on a KT133A board too, but there are a LOT of documented issues.
