Is my monitor getting tired?

Yesterday I came home and couldn't get my monitor to wake up. I leave sys on 24/7, monitor goes into hibernation, the power button turns yellow, then it usually goes green when active. When I tried to wake it up I noticed there was no light at all on the power button. Eventually, I just unplugged and replugged and it came back on...

However, there have been a few times lately when the monitor wouldn't wake up (but the power light was at least on), and I had to just shut down blindly and restart.

Are these signs that a 4-yr old monitor is about to poop out? Should I begin checking prices?

Yeah - so for now the best thing to do is leave the monitor on and use a blank screen saver. My old monitor started doing this, and one day it never came back on at all.

Mine hung in there for about 3 months - till I shut down to go out of town for a week - when I got back the monitor refused to come back on, period, R.I.P. Hop back in the car, go over to Sam's Club and drop $150. 6 years out of a Gateway (Mag) 17", not too shabby.

I decided to find this thread back, and I had to laugh... I went outta town this weekend and came back to find my old Princeton Graphics 17" had given up the ghost. No amount of button-pushing or unplugging/replugging can revive it.

It continued kicking for over a year after I originally posted this, so I guess I can't complain. Saw a Samsung 19" CRT Flat-Panel at Sam's for $170 a couple weeks ago. I guess I have an errand to run tomorrow. :)

Here's a question, tho. What does one do with a dead monitor? Will resell shops attempt to fix it if donated, or is there other proper disposal technique?

There are proper disposal methods [google em]. Umm... I don't entirely endorse this but you can go find a desolate dumpster behind a store and just dump it in there at midnight. You won't believe how many monitors I've dumped into this one dumpster by Home Depot :p

I heard that a Home Depot in Milpitas, CA is going to offer a recycling program also after they started finding monitors in their dumpsters out back. :D

That's funny, Fish. I think I read that somewhere, too...

I'll have to call Office Depot to see, as the article said they're recycling one product per day. I guess monitors would only be collected on one specific day during the specified time period. What about the small computer shop idea? Do little stores like that maybe want to tinker with them to bring them back to life, or use for parts or anything, or is that just a waste of space for them?

I know for a fact that large places like Comp USA wont touch old monitors. Its just not worth repairing them, especially with low CRT prices these days.

Plus, you really need to know what you are doing when opening a monitor, they can shock the beetlejuice out of you.

my cousin just bought a lcd 21 inch monitor about 6 months ago and he is havin these problems. the warrenty is over too so there is nothin he can do about it. he said he only leaves it on for about 2 hours a day. its a sony too. the other thing is he spent over 1k on this monitor and its pooping out.

Local stores here said they're taking monitors, printers, computers and computer components, laptops, and TVs less than 27" thru late August as far as they knew. No stereo equipment and no broken glass accepted. Good stuff, be sure to use it!
