If my video card says it will support Direct X 8.1, but no mention of DX9, will it support DX9 if I upgrade to DX9? It's an nVidia GeForce4 MX 440 64MB AGP 8x...

In a word, No, ghost_of_war. It's a DX 8.x card and will not take advantage of the added features of DX 9.x.
no...i suggest you dont. i have the same card and ive had some driver problems. and once u intall dx9 or any dx for that matter. uninstalling is NEAR impossible

Wow, good thing I asked. Now, what happens in the future when games require DX9 to continue installing and the card won't take advantage of it? Do you think nVidia will just update their Detonator drivers as they go?

This one isn't as simple, ghost_of_war :( - it means that a new card will be inorder...

I have GF4MX420, DX 8 video card, but I am running DX 9 but it simply doesn't take the features of DX 9.

Ya, that's what I mentioned above, but to take advantage of DX 9 and the features of games that use it, it will take a new card. I did not mean to imply that they wouldn't work together.

Oh, OK. I just wanted to make sure my current card will still 'function', but I understand that it will not take advantage of the DX9 features. Cool, understood...

My card supports lower DX, but I still installed dx9.0. Nothing happen. Everything is ok.

they can emulate some features of DX9 though, and games might require it soon
