Hi darrenp_21
Welcome to Pc Mechanic forums
I've got some questions for you:
1) What operating system?
2) Home-built computer or store-bought major brand?
3) If home built - what mobo/cpu? If major brand, what model?
4) At what point to you see a message asking you to update drivers?
5) Was this your first time adding a hard drive? [have you read about cables, jumpers, formatting, filesystems, etc.?]
6) What are the make/models of the two hard drives?
7) Do you have a driver disk from either the motherboard manufacturer, the system builder, or your add-on IDE controller card manufacturer (if any)?
For a quick try (if you have Windows 98), you can:
1) Right-click on My Computer
2) Left-click on the "Properties" tab
3) Left-click on "Device Manager"
4) look for any devices with a red X or yellow exclamation point - make a note of them & post that here.
5) If the only problem device is "Hard Disk Controller", then you can select that device with a left-click, and then left-click on the "Remove" button
6) Reboot
7) On reboot, the system will attempt to find the correct drivers for the controller - have your driver disk handy. (the Windows CD, motherboard cd, or controller driver disk - or download a recent driver from the Internet, if you're comfortable finding the correct one)
The above quick try assumes that you have the drives cabled, jumpered, and formatted correctly.
Best of luck
. . . Gary
