I recently bought an 80gb IBM deskstar and installed it in an I-Buddie external USB2 housing. I put a USB2 card into my PC but when I tried to transfer data, it would move about 60mb and then hang up. The housing has worked OK with a 4GB disk.
This happened again even when I deinstalled the USB2 card and went back to the ONboard USB 1. I have reinstalled drivers but still no joy.
Am I missing something?

What OS are you using?

Windows 98SE. Sorry, should have said! I have since tried the disk installed as an IDE device and the transfer went fine.

I think that rules out the drive then.

Could be the housing 'cause same thing happens on USBport (although that only being 1.0 may cause it's own probs, such as very slow).

Also check with a different cable.

EDIT Also not sure about Win9x with USB2, perhaps someone can enlighten me.

I run Windows 98SE and my USB2 ports work just fine.

There is one thing to try, though. USB devices don't always POP UP on their own - in the past I have had to insert them and then search for new hardware under control panels. Is it possible that it might have tried to detect the drive but still needs to be added in this way to be fully functional?

If you were using a plug-in card for USB2 perhaps you will need to update your BIOS. Maybe your board didn't originally support the protocol. What is the model?
