What type drive is it? CD-rom, cdr etc...When did it last work. Have you made any changes to the computer??
Need more info.

maybe just a loose IDE cable or power connection.

Is the combo an internal or external drive?
Tell us more about your system. Is it a generic PC or a brand one like Compaq or HP.
What CPU, how many hard drives, how many other optical drives i.e. CD-Roms, DVD-Roms, CD-RWs etc.
How do you have the combo jumpered - Master, Slave, or Cable Select. Is it sharing the cable with anything else?
As the other members have said, it seems like it's not getting power. Disconnect the power lead from the rear of the combo and reconnect it firmly. The connector (molex) is keyed, so it should only fit properly the right way up.
If that doesn't work, then try another power lead from the PSU, in case, the original power lead is faulty. If possible, use a power lead that was previously connected to another device and you know is working.
If all else fails, then try the combo in another PC to see if it's working. If the fault persists in another PC, then the chances are the combo is faulty.

if its an a pavillion you have ,it is probably the power supply, there power supplies are low wattage a had one go on me,i had to cut a lot of the inside case to make a power supply fit that wasnt hp.hp power supplies are expensive,so thats why i did my own modding and replaced it with a better one that was cheaper.have you got another power supply you can use temporarily to test it
Let's not overlook the real possibility that it's simply a defective drive.

cant really tell you what to do but you have to determine if your power supply is working, if it is, you have narrowed it down to your cd drive.is your warranty up on your computer?what model number is your pavillionif your not having any other power problems, try switching the power leads to one you know works,if it still not working then you are probably looking at a defective drive

i dont think i understand you correctly,is your hard drive not working or your cd drive?are you saying you switched the power supply from your hard drive to your optical drive and it still didnt work.did your harddrive work with that power supply from whta your describing your looking at the hard drive that has the seal on it
newme: I read it that the hard drive still works and the cd drive doesn't.
I think it's time to get a warranty replacement for the cd drive.
