I wanted to ask the forum for feedback on server motherboards (dual processor). I plan on building my first server so I can get some hands on experience with my own home lab. With a dual processor board can it run with only one CPU and what boards would you recommend? Thanks in advance.

Hi larry1135,

I would recommend using the Athlon MP CPU on a Tyan dual-socket board with the AMD 762 chipset. I'm not sure if you can run it using only one CPU, hopefully someone who has run an SMP system can help with that.

I don't know about socket style dualies, but the dual Slot 1 Intel boards I've worked with can run with only one processor, but you need a dummy card (provided with the board) in the unused slot.

Thanks for the replies. I am thinking of going with the Tyan S2466N-4M, and from what I have read in the manual it can run with just one processor. Which will help my pocket book until I can afford the second one. I had read that it can support Win NT4, Win 2000 and XP Pro. It does not mention that it can support say Advanced Server or .NET. Do you think this will be a problem? I will be using either Advanced Server or .NET just haven't decided yet.

It should work fine with any x86 OS on the planet.
