Well here I am again pattin' my self on the back.

My young son graduated from the McGeorge School of Law yesterday. He is 26 years old and been goin' to school for 21 of them.

Now for the bar exam at the end of July.

Sure has been a long haul.

That should make interesting Sunday dinners. One of my docs (a lung specialist) is married to an allergist and both of their parents are docs as well. He said at dinner, conversation always ends up on med stuff, even dissections, despite they always say nothing med-wise will be discussed.

Your son has pulled off quite an accomplishment and you should be very proud. I'm sure I don't have to remind him that the 3-Day California Bar Exam is the toughest in the nation. I'm sure he'll take a bar review course to prepare. A big part of passing the bar is handling the pressure. He's already heard all the horror stories so I don't need to add anything more.

He starts the bar review course Monday. Since his wife has already gone through it, her help will be invaluable.

I want to thank all of you for the kind words. I know there are some here whose son or daughter has accomplished something in their lives that made you just as proud.

Well, if you really want to know….

It’s a 3-day exam, 6 hours per day. You have 3 hours in the morning, a break for lunch, then 3 more hours in the afternoon. You’re responsible for 14 areas of law; contracts, torts, real property, criminal law, civil procedure, criminal procedure, constitutional law, evidence, corporations, wills, trusts, and so on.

The test consist of (6) one-hour essay questions where you will be called upon to analyze a lengthy “fact pattern” spot all the “legal issues” then bring the correct rules of law to bear on the problem; how you conclude is irrelevant. But it takes place under incredible time pressure.

Next you get (2) 3-hour written “performance exams” where you are given a very lengthy fact pattern or assignment; maybe 10 pages or more long, a “library” that contains maybe 10-15 cases you can use to resolve the problem. You might spend 1.5 to 2 hours just analizing and outlining the problem, then maybe 1 solid hour of writing as fast as you can. Again, the time pressure is crushing. To me, this was the toughest part of the exam.

Finally they give you 200 extremely difficult multiple-choice questions. 100 questions in the morning and 100 in the afternoon. Each question involves a very lengthy paragraph, followed by 4 possible choices. The questions (fact patterns) are unbelievably tricky. This area is where they test your knowledge of every element of the law. Most people who fail the Bar exam, fail this section. You must do well here to pass. It’s probably the toughest area of the Bar for most people. Again, the time pressure is very great.

So in summary, you’ve really gotta be hitting on all 8 cylinders when you tackle this baby and a large part of your success will be determined by how well you handle the incredible pressure. Choke for just an instant, and you’re history.

Wow, I didn't realized it was that involved. With times changing, has their approach changed on the bar exams at all? For instance with the use of computers, are you still now forced to write or can you use computers?

Nope, the Bar Exam hasn't changed any that I'm aware of since I took it in '96. The last major change was was about 10 years or so ago with the introduction of the 2) 3-hour performance exams I mentioned above.

You can type if you want, but no computers are allowed. Typing is not worth it in my opinion because you're responsible for any mechanical problems; if your typewriter goes south, so do you. Most just use a good old fashion "pen".

I can say with a good amount of a confidence that I would BOMB THAT TEST SOOOOO BAD!...LoL:D

I have always thought of legal representation as a very cool job, I love to argue, over the stupidest things, or some really important one...but if I had to take that test...first, I would be so stressed that I wouldnt even sleep for the 2 nights leading up too it. I would surely get a defunct pen that would give out on me. I would puke at lunch, and get a massive headache.

I work great under pressure in a physical job, but when it comes to tests...I bomb so bad...:(
