Hi,

I just stuck a new cd-rw drive in an old machine, and it doesnt seem to work. The system used to have a cd-rom installed before, but it broke, so I offered to change it for him.

During POST test, all drives, and cd-rw lights up, but its when the OS starts to load that a 'Atapi non-compatible' message appears.
During the POST test time, you can open and close the cd-rom, but soon after it doesnt work at all. Then the message appears.

It is my friends PC, an old desktop HP I think. Approx 64mb of Ram, and a Pentium 350Mhz chip ( I think). I think he had Win98 on it.

I got a feeling its happening because of the motherboard.
Anyone got any ideas on the problem?

I think you may have a defective drive on your hands. Before you RMA the drive, check the jumpering and try a different cable.

HI,

Ive tried 3 cables, and loads of jumper settings!!!
Ive added it as a slave to the Primary cable.
Ive also made it a master on the secondary IDE cable.
Nothing seems to work.

One thing I havent tried is putting it into another machine.
I'll try that later.

Could it be caused by motherboard being too old or not accepting the atapi standard?

Whats loosing me is that the cd-rw starts, so its getting power. You can eject it for a few seconds, then it just dies..

ANyway, thanks for the response, I'll try it later, and let you know how it got on.

If it didn't accept the ATAPI standard, you would have had the same issue with the old drive.

The article is valid, but not applicable to any internal IDE CD-RW drives, it applies to old 1x/2x/4x and external CD readers. I've had both old Ricoh and Memorex 2X cd burners, and they were both ATAPI standard.

Hi,

Sorry for the late response.

Apparently their was a cd rom drive in their. It was broken, so I actually never seen it in action.

glc, u were right , cd drive was the problem.
I added it to my machine and the same problem.

I added my cd-rw to my friends machine, and it worked just fine.
We have returned the cd player now..

Thanks for all the help people. Much appreciated.

Zinedene
