volume label for partitioning

how do you find the volume label name for a drive that has been partitioned but you want to remove it. needs a correct name.

The volume label should show up in the partitioning utility you're using. Are you using fdisk?

I have a util set called Tuff-Test Pro. It is a lowlevel assembly OS that allows me to check certan hardware issues. One great thing it does is a hard disk check that wipes the disk clean (Mr Proper eat your heart out!)

I don't think I've ever used a Volume label for a partition. I just leave them at "None".

I don't think it has a real function any more, but if you do label the volume with something descriptive, it shows up after the drive letter in My Computer and Explorer. Whatever the label function may be, it's a leftover from DOS.

Well I'd recommend Delpart especially for NTFS partitions as FDISK can't delete them. Delpart is the sledge hammer approach to removing partitons IMO but boy does it work! I'd be lost without it.

As for volume labelling, I think it makes sense to a give a logical drive a logical name. If you have many drives (say ten) you can see at a glance from Explorer exactly the drive you want to access by its' name. C, D, E, F, G, H etc etc means not very much at all when you're hunting for that one file that 'must be somewhere'.

I've only seen drives labeled on old win95 machines. :p (or 95 machines upgraded to 98)
