hcube-
your cpu and OS have nothing to do with your problem. (Win98 is NOT that old!!!)
run scandisc and let it fix errors automatically.
download regclean form the bottom of this page:
http://www.vtoy.fi/jv16/index.php
run the program, reboot and see if it has cleared things up.
if not try a registry restore. (f8 at boot, command prompt, and at c prompt type: Scanreg /Restore
and restore to a date before the problem arose.)
also, have you updated your virus definitions lately? if not go to your av manufacturer's site and download the latest and greatest...try running av again.
let us know how you make out.....

Try Dan's troubleshooting - and if you're still stuck with a problem Registry, a few questions:
1) Is this a new build, recent upgrade, store bought, or major brand?
2) Did everything run fine for months & now this?
3) What motherboard?
4) What memory? (type, speed, brand)
5) Any trouble with your Cd-drive? (if you installed from a flaky drive, your files could have suffered a bit. = same for flaky memory sticks, or over-aggressive memory timings)
6) Do you overclock?
7) Test the memory modules (http://www.simmtester.com)
8) Test the hard drive (go the manufacturer's website & download the disk diagnostics. The download makes a bootable DOS floppy with the diagnostics on it: DataLifeGuard for WDs, SeaTools for Seagates, Powermax for Maxtors, etc.)
My main concern (if it's not a virus) would be data corruption.

ps. its crucial tech. ram 512m ddr2100, abit -KX7-333 raid, cd drives seem reliable its a lite-on cd-rw drive and a samsung dvd.
built from scratch by me with no overclocking, and i dont think itl b corrupt data unless theres a cd problem bcz iv alrdy reformatted twice and its still doin it. might take a while 4 me 2 reply cz ill need 2 wait 4 it 2 happen after i fix it as its not every single time.
thx...

Jot a quick note if the gremlins sprout Registry errors again . . .
