Video card drivers

ok, im using ati 9700 pro, and i have not installed the newest catalyst drivers yet, i am using the drivers that came with the video card. Earlier tonight my cpu froze because the driver was messing up so i downloaded the new driver for windos xp catalyst 3.4, and i am using windows xp. after i downloaded it I went to add/remove programs in the control panel, then i chose the current drivers and uninstalled it.
When i went to install the new catalyst drivers it doesn't work and i get a variety of error messages
the first just says just the error number with no description in a window labeled internal failure.
When i click OK on that the install window closes and the same error message pops up again.

Once again i click OK, then i new error pops up. In a window called "Severe" it says "ISLAYER.DLL not loaded into memory".

I clcik OK and a new error message pops up saying
Error number: 0x80040702
Description: Failed to load dll: ISLAYER

setup will now terminate.

that is not the same number as the first 2 error messages.

Any ideas on what to do. This was my first build that i did in february, and its the first time i have ever dealt with drivers, except for in the initial setup. I allready tried to re-install drivers from the cd that came with vid card and they dont work either. What should i do?


edit: when i go to device manager i see 2 video related devices in the "other Devices" section.
they are
Video controller and
Video controller (VGA compatible)

both have exclamation marks on them, signaling soething is wrong. When i go to properties it says they are configured wrong and say i should re-install the drivers, but i dont want to go back to the old bad drivers.

if this would belong more in the video section of hardware go ahead and move it.

My first guess is that you need to install the drivers on top of the standard VGA drivers only, i.e. you need to install the standard VGA drivers. Video drivers are wierd.
Once you've rebooted with those drivers in, then install the new ones. If that don't work, let us know.

thanks Timpoet so far its worked have not tried to install the catalyst drivers, but when i did it this way i could see that some dll files were being transfered, hopefully they were the ones i needed.

edit. the new catalyst drivers still wont install same error messages but atleast now i got my old drivers back so my computer is functioning properly.

try uninstalling all video drivers and removing the video card in device manger, reboot and let windows recognise and reinstall the card. this should give you a clean start.
you have, at this time, the option to either use your newly downloaded drivers, the driver that windows wants to install or the ones on your cd. I would guess the ones you downloaded would be my first try. If they don't work, try the ones on your cd, after repeating the process.
I know you don't want to go back to the old drivers, but untill you get things sorted out, this might be the best thing.
I think a trip to ATI support might be a good idea. I have an older ati all in wonder card. When I was having trouble with their software they were very helpful.

Here's a quote from Pam123 from 8/9/02 about ATI's tech support's suggestion:

I've had my own run-ins with their tech support and this is their instruction for a clean install of a video card and its drivers for windows95/98/98se. I used it on my 32mb DDR Radeon.

-click Start, Run, type msconfig and click OK. Place a check in Selective startup, and uncheck load startup group items
-uncheck process autoexec.bat>uncheck process confis.sys ( if available)
-click OK and reboot
-remove the current ATI multimedia center and/or DVD player using add/remove programs in the control panel
-select NO when prompted to reboot. Then remove the ATI Display Driver. DO NOT REBOOT
-double click on My comp. on your desk top. ..double click on the C drive>double click on programfiles
-delete the ati multimedia folder>DO NOT REBOOT
-go to Start>Run>type regedit>click OK>click on registry on the menu bar
-export the registry to the desktop
-click on the plus sign beside Hkey local machine>click on the + sign besides software
-delete the ATI folders
-click onthe + sign beside the Hkey current user> click on the + sign beside software
-delete any ATI folders
-exit registry

Reboot to safemode

to do this you can hold down CTRL or hit F8 to bring up the MS starup menu
-select #3 to boot to safe mode

-open the Control panel and double click on System
-first select Performance and the Graphics button to ensure that the perforomance slider is set to full-if not, then change it but do not restart

-then select the Device Manager Tab and click on the + sign next to the display adapters.
-remove ALL VIDEO CARDS LISTED UNDER THE DISPLAY ADAPTER HEADING.
-remove all monitors as well.

-also click on the + sign beside the Sound Video and Games and remove anything that says ATI

-reboot to Normal Mode. Windows will detect new hardware
-cancel this and seleect No if prompted to reboot.

-open Device Manager.
-double click on the video card listed here and select the Driver Tab
-select Update Driver and the Display A List.
-Select Show All Hardware and then Standard Display Type VGA
-Apply the changes and reboot.

-install the new display drivers by double clicking on the driver download or by running the ATI installation cd.
-reboot

-click Start, Run, type msconfig and click OK
-place a check in Normal startup, click OK and reboot
-test the system.


There you have it , the clean install at full length an unabridged, exactly as directed by ATI tech support.
If you figure out a good short cut let me know but I can say that this works.
