I would like to put RH9 or other Linux OS on one of my computers that my kids use so they can start learning about Linux but would not feel happy doing this unless I can find some sort of filtering program. Does anyone use one or know of one I could use?

Hi,
Check out Dans Guardian. I'm not sure if it comes with RH, but a search of rpmfind should find it.

I don't think that there is a rpm but the install is not hard. I have been evaluating it at work. Currently we have SurfControl running on a Windows Server. DG seems to filter more and work better and faster. The SurfControl costs $1000 bucks for 50 users.
You will also need to install squid as a proxy server first
For him to learn Linux, he will need root access but if he has root access, he will be able to turn off the filter. What you might want to do is have the proxy server running on a different machine so he can have root access to his but not the proxy server.

Ok so first I have to download squid and install, before I try that how can I find out if I already have it or if it is on the RH9 cd`s? :(

More than likely squid is already on the CD.

How can I find out not just for squid but for other programs I may need in the future.

I usually just install the bare minimum of programs and add the ones that I need as I need them. For one, it's not necessary to have everything installed. Two, by the time you may need the program, there is probably a newer version out anyway.
