Accessing Hotmail and Yahoo accounts from Outlook and OE

Is there a way I can retrieve my Yahoo and Hotmail mail using Outlook and Outlook Express? How?

I tried to create the accounts in the Tools > Accounts > Add in OE but that didn't work. And in Outlook I am lost, since I don't use it but my client does.

Can anyone help me here?

That is exactly the way in OE.

What was the problem? The wizard should help you through the process quite happily for hotmail or any POP3 account.

Note that POP3 access to Yahoo! is now a paid service, but there are applications that will sit between (daisy chain with) Yahoo!'s web (http) interface and OE (or any other POP3 client) to allow transfer of emails. Yahoo!Pops is one I know of.

Outlook will depend on the version. I think that 97 and possibly 98 could not access Hotmail, but that 2000 and onwards can. I have both, but not in front of me, so post back with version info, and I'll see if I can help.

Yes, it is Outlook 2000.

What I typed in the POP3 fields in OE was: hotmail.com and yahoo.com.mx. Is that correct?

Hotmail is not POP3 - it's HTTP.

Do you (or your client) have the POP3 option for Yahoo? I dunno about Mexico, but here that's extra cost.

Regarding Hotmail, how should I set it up if it's not POP3?

What version of OE? OE6 sets up hotmail almost automatically. All you need is your email address and password.

Hotmail works with OE 5 or greater for free (at least in the United States). Go to Tools > Accounts > Mail > New >

Type the Display Name (name you want to appear on your e-mail) >
Next>
Type your Hotmail account name: username@hotmail.com

The setup wizard will take care of the rest.

Yep, RayH, you were correct. Dunno why the first time the program prompted me to enter the POP3.

I deleted the Hotmail accounts and created one again and this time the wizard identified properly the Hotmail's HTTP setup and I had it running in no time.

Check out Yahoo!Pops (sourceforge) to access Yahoo using a POP3 client.

It is slower of course, since the app sits between your POP3 client and the Yahoo web interface, but it does seem to work, although not as good as paying for the full service.
