Hi,
I am a current XP user and i wanted to explore the Linux OS. I have a book on Linux C and had RH for dummies. I wanted to know, what is the easiest way to partition the hard drive without jacking up my files on XP? I tried the way suggested in the RH book. FDisk i think. I was trying to put in the Linux Partition and it said gave me and error message saying something about giving a valid partition. Also, is RH the best version? THANKS,

If your hard drive is a single NTFS partiton then you are going to have some problems.

If you trying to install XP and Redhat on a single hard drive, and you already have XP on 1 partition which occupies the entire disk, repartition the hard drive with PartitionMagic first.
After that, you can install Redhat on the 2nd partition with no problems.

Just boot with Redhat CD and install. In the setup process, you are able to play with the 2nd partition without touching the 1st partition which belongs to XP.

PartitionMagic is not free. Maybe someone hear knows of a 3rd party re-partitioning software that is free.

If money is the issue you can throw in a scavanged hard drive (if you have an old one) as slave and install Linux on that as to not to mess with your setup. Just boot from floppy (or cd) when you want to run Linux. Does newer RH still use LILO?

Also, XP has a partition tool in disk management. I don't know it allows ntfs and fat on the same disk, though.

also, I had a heck of a time with my hardware configuration. You may want to check the hardware compatibility at Red Hat. I am running RH 6, so I don't know if newer versions have support for newer hardware. I don't presume to know everything about this, these are just some of the issues I encountered. I hope it helps...
