Hi,
I am trying to Network a Windows 95 computer directly to a Windows XP laptop using an RJ-45 crossover Cat5 Ethernet cable. I inserted the Network Setup Disk into the Win 95 Computer and double clicked the proper file on the disk. It said the disk only worked for Win 98, ME, and 2000 and to consult my XP manual. The problem is I dont have an XP manual! HELP!!!

You have to set up the networking manually on the 95 box. You need Client for Microsoft Networks, a nic card, TCP/IP set to use DHCP, and File and Print Sharing for Microsoft Networks.

Go to your command line shell and type 'ipconfig'

On the 95 machine:

Control Panel, Networks. Verify what I posted is there, if TCP/IP isn't there, Add - Protocol - Microsoft - TCP/IP. It will probably ask you for the Win95 CD if the cabs aren't on the hard drive and pointed in the registry. After the reboot, open the properties of the TCP/IP and on the WINS tab, make sure the button on the bottom that says "use DHCP for WINS resolution" is selected. The XP box will act as a DHCP server to assign the 95 box an IP address.
