Confusion about our LAN

I'm a salesman at a car dealership and act as the partial computer guy.

Last week we had trouble with the car manufacturer DNS server we use as the default on the DHCP. I replaced that DNS with 3 addresses supplied by our ISP Sprint. We now are able to use URLs on the net.

Here is the question. A computer will be able to bring up MSN.com and then 5 minutes later won't be able to use any URL. A little bit later all is well again. It is not our internet service since I am able to tracert to any IP address that I wish. I have no idea if it is coincidental or not but if I use an IP address in the address bar of Explorer sometimes things start working again.

I have figured out it is the same 4 computers that are having the trouble and they are all running Win98. No idea if that means anything.

I have found a common element. All the computers having the problem are running IE 5 and all the ones that are running fine are on IE 6. No clue as to why that might make a difference.

The problem I'm running across now is how to get IE 6 on those machines. The automatic installer that you download from MS must use URLs since it wont work.

If possible, I would start by upgrading your 98 machines to WIN2k

Not sure if these commands are available on the Windows 98. At the command line shell, type 'ipconfig /registerdns' then 'ipconfig /flushdns'.

Not possible to upgrade all the machines. One, not sure they even meet the minimum requirements. Two, I would not want to be the one to recommend buying all those licenses in this car market.

I have run out of ideas why 3 machines out of 25 won't work on the web using URLs. With tracert I am able to reach all 3 DNS servers that I have listed in the DHCP from those machines. If I type in an IP address in the address line I am able to reach websites.

I was able to download a full version of IE6 and put it on one of the machines and it didnt help. Was only a shot in the dark to begin with.

No neither of those commands are available in 98. I have ipconfig ALL, batch, renew, release, renew_all, release_all.

wait, are you saying you are running DHCP on Advanced Server and all clients are pointing to this server for DNS?

I believe the the equivalent command for "ipconfig" that you are looking for Win98 is "winipcfg" which can be run from the "Run" command line.

Once you pull up the info. you'll have a drop down list where you can choose your network adapter. Also, click on the "more info" button.

Just another way to view the information through a windows enviroment.
