I've been working on networking two computers with a crossover cable and TCP/IP, the host named "Snowflake" and the guest named "Hailstone". Hailstone under Network Neighborhood shows Entire Network and Hailstone. When you double click on Entire Network, it brings up "Workgroup". When you double click on Workgroup, only Hailstone shows.

On Snowflake, double clicking on Network Neighborhood shows Entire Network and Snowflake. Double clicking on Entire Network shows absolutely nothing, no workgroup, no Snowflake.

What's going wrong? I feel like I'm kinda close, and it is getting more frustrating as the minutes go by...

Hi tranman,

Do both systems have the same workgroup name?

Yes, they have the default "WORKGROUP" name for each.

I switched out the cable, just to be sure. Both jacks are lighting up yellow and green, I'm assuming that's OK. But still no ability to see the other computer, either on network neighborhood or in windows explorer. Am I missing something?

Installed NetBeui protocol, am networking in an instant! Installed Microsoft ICS, created the client disk, installed that- Bang! Everything is working great. I split the phone cord at the jack with a two-way splitter, and then plugged a phone cord into each modem. This way, computer #2 can use its own modem without having to turn Computer #1 on. When Computer #1 is online, Computer #2 just needs to launch a browser to join in. Perfect! Inlaws very happy! :D

thanks glc and ktkendall for the advice and the patience
