What would happen if I booted from a recovery disk and renamed all the "dat" files?
Will windows reinstall everything fresh when I start it from the HD?
Thanks

You mean like USER.DAT, SYSTEM.DAT and CLASSES.DAT.... those are your registry files and the system would fail to boot.

Nope... the registry is built at the time of install and modified as programs are put it.... Windows can't just make a new generic registry.
