fatal exception 0028:00000000 in vxd vmm(01)

Everytime I load windows I get a fatal exception error on a blue screen.

A fatal exception occurred at 0028:C000BC7D in VxD VMM(01) + 0000AC7D. The current application will be terminated.

Any solutions?

What version of Windows are you using?

How long has this been going on?

Did you install anything new just prior to this happening?

What kind of computer is it...home built or name brand?

Try this...boot the system to Safe Mode and see if you get any error message relating to RAM before it gets to Safe Mode. To boot to Safe Mode, hold the Shift key while booting up. If that doesn't work, keep hitting the Ctrl key and at the Boot Menu, choose Safe Mode.

i dont think anything was installed just prior to this happenening. The PC is home built along with another 5 which haven't had any problems yet.

It's been going on for a couple of weeks now.

Its using windows 98.

I'm not at the comp now but I will try the safe mode thing tomorrow. Thanks

have had similar probs myself. not totally resolved, but getting there. Am running Win ME. Went to support.microsoft.com then knowledge base forum for Windows version using. searched for exception problems and VxD and found out static VxD driver was loading in registry. web site troubleshooting if you keep searching the site and clicking links, is very thorough. it's two devices trying to share addresses, likely a network adapter, TSR or Norton Firewall.
I am not qualified to instruct you about this; go to the site and do a search for all possible terms in your Windows version and you will find the answer. Most importantly, you need to search for "How to do a clean boot Windows" in order to really hone in on the culprit driver and fix the problem.
Seems to be a big ME problem I've heard, and that upgrading to XP solves the probs.

this site helps explain about the whole VMM.vxd file and its short comings.

when I ran windows 98 I would also get the BSOD relating to the vmm.vxd file, so I copied the seven .vxd files (which are combined in the vmm.vxd file) to my /windows/system folder, after doing this I didn't receive any blus screens related to vmm.vxd.

How do I copy the 7 vxd files that are combined?

they are on the windows 98 disk , on the link I posted scroll down to the bottom and it specifies which .cab files contain the seven files, then just extract them to the /windows / system folder
