I occasionally go to repair somebodies computer and notice that even if they have a legal copy of windows 98 (the disc) they sometimes have some of the files stored on the C drive eg: C:/win98/

When I have tried to copy the files from a win98 cd to the hard drive to make installing new hardware and some software easier so there is no need for the cd it never seems to work when it comes to using the win98 folder on the hard drive.

Does anyone know which files they have copied and how?

Thanks

Adrian

The whole Win98 folder is copied from the CD to the hard drive before Win98 is installed on the hard drive.

The hard drive is fdisked and formatted first and then the Win98 installation is run from the Win98 folder, not the CD.

I take it you do it all in the following order....

1.fdisk and format

2.copy the win98 folder to the c:/

3.run setup from this folder.

if this is correct how do you copy the folder to the c:/

I often use that technic. Just use a Win 98 boot disk with CD support and copy it over as you would do in Window.

how do you copy the folder to the c:/ Use a good Win98 startup floppy that has fdisk and format on it and prep the hard drive.

Reboot the system with the startup floppy and choose "CD Support" so you can access the CD-ROM drive. Put the Win98 CD into the CD-ROM drive.

From the a: prompt, change to the c: drive (from the a: prompt, type "c:\" without the quotes and hit Enter) and make a directory on it named win98 (at the c: prompt, type "md win98" without the quotes and hit Enter). From the c: prompt again, type "cd win98" (change directory to win98) to get into the win98 directory. From the c:\ win98 prompt, type "copy x:\win98\*.*" without the quotes and hit Enter (substitute your CD-ROM drive letter for "x"). This will copy all the necessary files for Win98 installation. When the copy process is complete, type "setup" and hit Enter and the Win98 installation will begin.
