I just finished putting my PC back all together after lapping not jsut my HSF but the P4s IHS too! :D

after about 4 minutes in windows, i ran a lot of stuff, including playing on my ePSXe emulator, which whips the CPU.

at first i was quite surprised to see round about the same idle temps..

usually after playing on GT2 my CPU would be about 58 on max fan revs, now, its hit 52 on minimum fan revs,

im impressed!!

although i was slightly nervous about sanding my P4 down, with wet, wet and dry paper

You sanded the die on the processor!? Thats pretty brave! Could you explain a little better how you did it and what grit sandpaper you used?

i used 400, 600, 800 and 1000 grit sand paper

used each grit, starting with the roughest for about 20 mins each, sanding in one direction about 40 times, turning 90 degrees wetting the sandpaper, 40 times 90 degrees until id turned the hole heatsink round about 3 times fully

then i moved on to the next grade, and repeated the process. at the end it had a very good reflection and was totally flat,

then i did the same for my P4, i sanded it until all the aluminium was gone and the copper showed through all over, i needed a LOT less AS3, i scraped like all of it off with a credit card

Thats pretty cool...I need to lap my heatsink....
How shiny was it when you got done? could you see your reflection?
I would not suggest lapping the core of an amd tho!!! lol, that'd be a bad deal

Lapping a P4 is generally safe because it uses a heat spreader cap, not an exposed core.

nope, i left it pretty scratched up, although it did have a good reflection, you want the scrathes there to poke through and make good cantact

i have to say, the copper P4 looks way better than that plain old nasty aluminium :)
