Hey guys,

Just finished building a sweet system but when I checked the temps throught BIOS it said that the cpu was running at 64 celcius. The mobo runs at 32 cel. Is that too hot? Should I add another fan?

Intel P4 2.4 GHZ
1024 MB PC2700 RAM
Westen digital 2000 GB HD with 8 mb cach @ 7200 rpm
Geforce 4
Intel D845GEVB2 Motherboard
Mitubishi CDRW 52/24/52
Mitubishi Floppy
Sexy Verra V770 case

My pride and joy.

I think it's a little hot. Do you have any ventilation in your case? if not, add a rear and front case fan and we'll see

well i got the cpu fan running same with the power supply. The cpu heat sink was not hot to touch but the vid card heat sink was.

if you're cpu heatsink isn't hot to touch, maybe the thermal probe isn't working right.. I'm not sure maybe someone can help?

as for the video card, yes the newer cards are hot that's normal

Only problem is that there was not thermal paste. There was i kinda magnet lokkin like thing on the bottom of the heatsink.

Did you peel off the plastic protector on the thermal pad?

If he used the stock HSF it doesn't have a plastic protector on the thermal pad. Which it sounds like he is using the stock Intel HSF.

Something is very wrong! I have the Intel retail package P2.4-533 in this system, and I've never seen it get past the mid 40's under a sustained full load. I have two extra exhaust fans in addition to the normal P/S and processor fans. 64C for the P2.4 is way too hot.

my P4 will hit 53-54 under thrashing

I built a system very similar to yours and the CPU temp never went above 40C (with a 2.53GHz P4). You may want to install at least 1 rear exhaust fan to help remove built up heat from the case.

Another thing, check the heatsink retention ring around the CPU socket and see if it's lifting up from the motherboard. If it is, you might want to return the motherboard since this will prevent the heatsink from being held down on the CPU with the required force to allow good thermal transfer to occur.

My P4 2.4B has hit 65’C with the stock HSF with the ambient temperature around 28’C but after installing a Vantec VP4-C7040 HSF the temp will stay under 52’C under a load. I also have three case fans and large case.

I'm just a rookie at this, but I'm running the same 2.4b P4 on an Asus board. My cpu temp is 28 & mobo is 35. Could it be that his cpu voltage is too high? My system is built in an old Gateway ATX case with stock hsf and the stock fans from the Antec 350sl psu. My room temp is about 75F. Even running a looped Sandra test, my cpu peaked at 42c.

While some motherboards report CPU temps a little high sometimes, there is really too large of a delta between your temperatures. I would make sure you heatsink is making proper contact. Since his case temperature is already low, I don't he's having a problem with airflow; more case fans then probably will not help.

Yeah i think warghoul was right. I'll check the heatskink connection. The BIOS said that the temps could be inaccurete but I still thinks it's hot. The airflow in the case was good.

Looks way hot to me,I have the same cpu o/c to 2555, stock hsf, rear exhaust, front intake running at 44c idle, 47 under load.

warghoul may have a point, the CPU temps with the PC in my signature seem to be higher than my other P4 2.4B with stock cooling on an Asus P4S533 which sits right next to the other PC and the temps are 41’C and the one is my signature is 47’C.

As long as the heatsink is not too hot touch you should be alright.

BTW both my CPU's are overclocked, the one in my sig is at 3.06 and the other is at 2.7 but regaurdless of the clock speed the temps stay the same.

One thing to consider, the P4 will not burn up if it overheats, it just throttles itself back to use less power, and obviously gets a lot slower. Tom's Hardware had an interesting test a while back where they removed the heatsink from a P3, P4, and several AMD processors. The AMD's went up in smoke, and one took the MB with it, the P3 crashed but was not damaged, and the P4 didn't miss a beat, just slowed way down to prevent overheating. It was a pretty impressive performance. :)

i noticed that too jimmie. no matter how much i OCd, to the point where it was just awful to start up, the temps stayed the same, the temp only really increase when you increase the volts, but P4s hate that

I didn't say you couldn't blow them up with out of spec voltages, just that you can't burn them up with poor heatsinking. :D

My 2.53GHz P4 idles at around 24C, and hits about 33C under *heavy* load. This is with the stock HSF with ASIII.

Hello,
I was wondering if this was a acceptable tempeture for my system.
P4 3.06g CPU idle 46C non idle playing EQ for 12hours it goes up to 53C
Mobo ASUS P4PE-BP 23C never goes over.

I have room to add one more fan after that I will have to mod my case to allow more fans. My PSU is handling the outake and boy can it move the air I swear if the case had wheels it would move. So do you think the above tempetures are acceptable or would I be better off adding one more fan. I am planning on purchasing an outake fan for my video card.

Really, if your system is stable and running well, don't worry about those temps.

Yes, the adjacent room is air-conditioned.

How are you guys getting the CPU and Mobo temps in the BIOS? I would really like to see how hot my Compaq Presario laptop gets!
