loaded linux... what now?

Ok, so just for fun I've wiped my hard drive and loaded Redhat Linux 7.0 on my machine. What now? I've got a command line that I'm slowly making my way around. How do I get onto the internet with it? How do I make it useable for every day tasks such as FTP-ing my htm files to a server?

I connect to the internet using DSL, although I have no idea how to set that up in Linux. Pretty much brand new to this. If you can send me to tutorials or help... anything would be nice. I'm sick of windows screwing up and I'm ready to dive into Linux and learn if and how it might work for me.

Hi,

Well, try and type startx after you log in. That should start the x-server and load the Gnome desktop (RH default). Poke around and have fun.

Okay! Now that I'm in a crappy-looking windows simulator (which - I know, I can customize when I learn how), how do I set up my internet connections? I have something automatic that tried to look for a modem but couldn't find my LAN connection. I have DSL and a D-Link (2Wire?) Ethernet adapter hooked up to a hub... Any ideas?

Hi,

I haven't used RH since 6.2 but, when you went to set it up you need to tell it to use the ethernet card instead of looking for a modem.

I wish I had dsl instead of dial-up.:)

Someone said something about setting my NIC to DHCP.

How might I do that? Through netconfig? In windows, all I did was set the driver for my D-Link ethernet card and it was happy to connect me. I'm going through a router, so I don't believe I need any tools or fancy programs. I believe I'm just missing something simple because I'm not used to the setup.

After searching through numerous sites, it looks like I need to make sure the correct module (is that the same as driver?) is working. When I lspic -v, I get 'Ethernet controller: D-Link system Inc: Unknown device 1300 (rev 10)'

I'll see if I can get more specific info on my settings...

'ifup eth0' gives me 'Delaying eth0 initialization'
'ifdown eth0' gives me nothing, as if it worked fine.

when I run netconf from sbin...

Is there a way to access my windows partitions through Linux? Or a way to access my Linux partitions through windows?

I can download the drivers in windows onto c:, but I can't install them from Linux.

If not, does anyone know of a good cd-burning program that is shareware and downloadable?
