adding hd

i want to add a hd i got off a compaq to my newer pc and i try it and it wont start up i formatted the drive already i just dont know how to get them both connected

How do you have the drives jumpered?

What kind of IDE cable are you using? 40 or 80 wire?

Does the BIOS recognize the new hard drive?

I'm not sure but you might need to get rid of the existing partitions on the Compaq hard drive first. You can use Delpart (http://www.russelltexas.com/delpart.htm) for that.
