Hosting Your Own Website

I am very interested in learning how to host my own website... What is involved??? Does anyone know how i can go about doing it if I use dynamic IP dsl.... It is accept by my provider so i am very interested... I heard taht there are softwares that will make your connection always stay on the same IP address so hosting could work with dynamic IP.... Is there anything that I can do before i have my own domain name??? PLease Help...... Thank You

Remember that if your website is popular you'll have many accesses, so a firewall is a must to stop the nosy intruder from finding those "special" files you keep in a personal folder.

Keep in mind also that running a webserver over a DSL or cable connection is almost always against the AUP of the provider and can result in your service being cancelled.

Step 1: Go to www.godaddy.com and register a domain name. It's only about 8 bucks a year.

You can also use No-IP. It's a program that sends your IP to their DNS servers, and you get a permanent address that redirects to your IP. www.noip.com

It's also free.

What do I do after i register a domain name??

I tried noip.com but i dont understand how to use it... where exactly do i go... (im already registered for te free account) What about zoneedit??? Is it the same as noip.com b/c noip costs money to add ur own domain and zoneedit.com is free....???? Thanks again

Godaddy is only $8.95 a year for a top level .com domain, and it doesn't cost anything to change the dns. You could use dyndns.org for $24.95 a year to keep your DNS pointed to your dynamic IP.

Dyndns.org has a free service aswell, the only difference is with the free service you have to force an update of your IP every 30 days while the paid service does not require this.

Does the free service work with a top level domain registered elsewhere, or just one of their xxxxxxx.dyndns.org subdomains?

He would have to forward his domain to the dyndns.org subdomain, not sure if it works with the top level by itself.

The last thing that's free is Granite Canyon DNS that I know of. Widge used to be free but is not any longer as of about 3 months ago :\.
