Viewing NTFS HDD on RH 9

I installed Red Hat 9 on a second hdd. What I want to do is view and copy the files from my primary hdd running Windows XP Professional and NTFS partitioned. Is it possible to do this without damaging the hdd with Windows XP and all my files in it?

yep it is possable and if you installed another version of Linux it usally is installed by default. redHat leaves NTFS support turned off in a default install. You can do a couple of things but I won't promise you either will work without some pain. It took me awhile to make this work. There is a rpm you can install at http://linux-ntfs.sourceforge.net/info/redhat.html.
I got the rpm to install ok, but still couldn't read my NTFS...so I went to
linuxiso.org forums and found "how to mount NTFS volumes in Red Hat Linux" (you'll have to look for it). Between the instruction there, on the rpm page, and in the Red Hat Docs I got it to work.
Don't forget to update the /etc/fstab to mount the partitions.

Thanks a lot. I'll try it. This is my first day using Linux and I have to say that I'm overwhelmed to the brink of returning to Windows with all these rpms, compiling, mounting, etc.

Belive it or not, I am fairly new to the Linux arena myself. If you like learning and are not afraid to play you'll love the path you are now on. don't let it get you down.

Also, consider FreeBSD. It is a great learniing tool and a darn good OS....


Another note.....

I tried linux no less then four times before I got serious enough about trying it. Now I love it. (I still love Windows too!)
