Hard drive makeing weird noises

I have 2 questions.
1. A few days ago my hard drive started sounding weird. When my hard drive is on and spining, it sounds like the disk is hiting something. Has anyone ever had this problem or know how to fix it?

2. Which side of the hard drive is the top and which is the bottom, I was going to put my HD in another computer but I didn't know which side was up or if it mattered at all.

Just so no one askes but its mounted sideways in my desktop style computer now, thats the way it came, would that cause the problem mentioned in my first question?

1. It's either file corruption or the drive is getting ready to die. Download and run the diagnostic software from the hard drive manhfacturer.

2. Bottom is the side with the circuit board, it doesn't matter which way you mount it BUT see below.......

3. Once a drive is run in a certain orientation, it needs to be kept that way or you MAY have issues, the bearings wear a certain way and changing that CAN cause what you are describing.
