View Full Version : What is that silver cover on a HDD?

What is that small (about the size od a dime) oval/rectangular piece of silver metal on the side of the HDD? It is soft to the touch (for a metal) and dents very easily. Does anyone know??? thanks.,

That is probably going to be a sticker covering a screw. If you poke a hole in the sticker or peel it off you have voided the warranty. It may also cover the breather hole on the drive, but these are usualy hard plastic, not pliable stickers.

hmm, that is weird that there would be a need to cover a screw don't you think? i sort of indented it a tad bit when i was mounting it, do you think that is a bad thing?

Not at all. See, if they cover all the screw holes, they would know if you unscrewed any of them. Then they would say sorry, you opened it, we are not going to replace it for you.

I saw a articel about hard drives and they had a diagram of the drive head above the platter, there was some distance between the two (of course it was a blown up drawing) then there was this huge circle that was almost as high as the head that was floating above the patter, then a jaggd rockey thing about 50% bigger than the distance the head was floating.....

The circle was a human hair on end! The jaged thing was a spec of dust!

You open the thing up and it is dead, (that is unless you have a clean room and I do not mean a quick vacuum and tidy up)
like blakhart said, you remove the cover over the screws and it is presumed that you opened it and your warranty is history. If you poke one a little I do not think that there would be any questions.

Oh okay. I see the logic there. Yea I looked at a few diagrams also and was amazed at what goes on in there! However, I recall reading somethng about how WD drives are built to withstand intense trauma. :) I don't know if that is true or not.

A guy I know took a drive and filled it full of distilled water. As in dropped the whole thing, after he removed the cover, into a bucket. Ran fine. Unfortunately, he didn't realise that the water would thin out the lube on the drive's bearing... oops. He thinks that if he used mineral oil it would still be running. He crazy like that.
