View Full Version : HD freezing, maybe overheating?

Hi all!! I bought a case w/motherboard and entended to add parts from my old computers. I have Windows 98 partially installed (after much time and frustration) but the drive freezes up after being on for a few minutes. The longer I wait to turn it on, the longer it will stay up but never more than 5- 10 minutes. I have left it at what ever point it was for up to a couple of hours at a time just to see if it is trying to load stuff. It is a used Maxtor 30G. I don't know what type of system it was origionaly on. The Windows I have installed is from a Emachines 500IS. The new computer is a AMD Athlon XP1800+, CPU 266FSB with DDR266/333/400+ Motherboard with SiS 746FX chipset. Do you think the freeze up could be from not having the new motherboad and faster processor on the drive? Thanks in advance for all suggestions!

If the hdd was working before why don't you do a fresh install of windows?

I'm assuming it was working before. I bought it used. I've tried reforming, reinstalling .. everything but throwing it out the window which just may be next on my list.

I tried waiting awhille and turned the machine back on, and got a fatal exceotion in 0E 0028:C00396A5 IN VXD IFSMGR (01) + 00005CE1. I was getting a few fatal exceptions when trying to install Windows from a HD that was in my old computer. The 1st one was 0E AT 0028:C004E8CD, rhen, 0E AT 9928 C0004E80 IN VXD CALLED FROM 0028:C1479064 IN VXD . ALSO 0E AT 0028:C000641EM VXD VMM(C01)+0000541E.
I was assuming these origional errors where because I didn't have any of the drivers loaded. I'm afraid I am totally ignorant when it comes to these error codes.
Where do I go???? HEEELLppp

Download the HDD manufacturer's mainetenance program to a floppy and run a diagnostic test on it. Don't do the short test, do the advanced test.

are you sure that the cpu is not what is heating up ?

Assuming your HD passes the PowerMax test:

Have you disabled any BIOS anti-virus that may exist on the new mobo?

If you have more than one stick of Ram, then try each stick one-at-a-time. Or alternatively, try a new stick.

You might want to run the PowerMax Zero Wipe program on the HD. That will restore the HD to factory condition. Then try installing Windows again.

Hi all! Thanks for your suggetions. I downloaded the program but do I have to get into windows to be able to use it? I can't get windows all the way up and it says no boot record from floppy as it's booting. Sorry its been so long since an update.

You can't "install" Windows to a hard drive from another hard drive that has Windows already installed on it. How exactly did you do this?

You need the Windows installation CD in order to install it to a hard drive.
