Technicolor AVG?

I just installed AVG on my 98se, and after finishing install I of course had to reboot. During reboot, between POST and Windows screen, there was about a 15-sec period of full screen multicolor flashing tiny rectangles in some psychedelic pattern. It continued to boot, got to Windows, and brought up AVG First Run Wizard with no other probs.

Yup. First boot up after install, is a DOS scan for memory resident and boot sector viruses. You can disable it within AVG, or just leave it, and you should not see it any more.
You can also disable the splash screen.
