Just got done reformatting my brothers COMPAQ. Installed the latest video card drivers, and using onboard sound.
System ran fine for a little bit, but then I got a black screen. So I rebooted the PC, and still getting a black screen, although I can hear the Windows sound in the background.
Gonna put in another video card in tomorrow, but I know that video card works, what could be the problem? I am guessing it is a faulty monitor cable or the monitor itself? the monitor is like 6yrs old, came from a gateway computer back when I had it.
Let me know what you guys think of this issue.
The computer is a COMPAQ, AMD DURON 700Mhz with Windows ME, and used COMPAQ system recovery. Although the PC is a few years old, the hard drive could be dying at any moment.

It's easier to try a different monitor first - rather than opening it up and messing with a video card.

Try jiggling the handle...

Play with the connector a little and see if it works out, this happened to me last week qith my friend's HP, her mom ended up playing with it and it worked, i felt silly.

I put in a new video card because I did not have access to another monitor, because my PC runs 24/7 so the monitor is always on. Although, I think it is the cable from the video card to thre monitor, it only lets me screw in one screw not the other one.
