... this computer!!!

Last week i posted a comment about connecting my hifi to my pc, well that was asnwered quickly enough. It was also suggested that i should invest in a soundcard due to the fact that my current one is an onboard one.

Well i didn't invest in a new sound card but i was given one by my friends, this is where the problem is. When i actualy went to install it into my machine not of the slots were big enough i've tride every slot available and the fact of the matter is that it just won't fit in.

Any suggestions would be GREATFULLY taken.

Ps. since delving into my computer, my floppy drive doesn't work any more, all the leads are plugged in correctly and firmly but still nothing, when i load the computer and goto the 'a' drive it says that there is no disk in the drive, even though there is

If your slot is a pci and the card is an isa it will never fit, sometimes the case itself doesn´t allow a card to fit, a few months ago I had to remove a board´s metal bracket to make it fix into the slot, of course this is not recomeded.

sounds like you have a computer with only PCI (white color/ modern) slots and a sound card that is ISA (black in color/ obsolete), check out this picture

Please do not take offense at it being a kids site, it was just the first one I came across with the two pictures on the same page.

If this is the case there really is not much you can do as any conversion would likely cost way more thatn just a new PCI sound card


Now to the floppy, make sure that both ends of the ribbon cable are firmly attached, one to the motherborad and the other to the floppy, second make sure the power line to the floppy (the one with only four wires) is firmly in. If you took off the ribbon cable during your exploration, it does have a right way and a wrong way, the end that has the cut and twisted wires goes in the floppy.

thanks sdkfz, thats absolutly correct, as for the floppy problem, i'll have a look at it tomorow. I've taken my pc apart enough times today, and knowing my luck something else will go wrong :-(
