Nero Says It Doesn't Support My Type of CD

I've just spend several hours trying to burn a cd and am stuck. I even uninstalled and reinstalled the program. When I try to begin the burn process using the the Data format with Nero55914, it says something like that it doesn't support my type of CD. Has anyone ever had that happen and know what I could do to fix it. I have a very old Smart&Friently CD recorder. An older version of Nero worked fine with Windows98se but now I am using Windows 2000 and I don't think the older version will work anymore.

I ran into this recently with Roxio 5 Platinum and a new Lite-On CDRW. I downloaded an update from Roxio and it solved the problem.
