Ok here what I have at the moment:

2 Hard Drives:
C: Drive - Windows 98SE Only!
D: Drive - Games Installed, apps and Downloaded stuff!

Question 1:
If I want to put XP on D: Drive do I need to Format it and lose all my installed programs and downloaded files?

Question 2:
If not what happens when I install XP - can I still use all the games/programs that I installed through Windows 98SE or will I have to re-install them through Windows XP?

I don't want to lose everything that I have either installed or downloaded!

Thanks.

But yes, you would have to either move all that stuff to somewhere else or burn them to CD-R so that WinXP can do it's thing to get the hard drive ready for it's installation. Or you can use something like Partition Magic to create a new partition to install WinXP to.

If the first hard drive is pretty big, you could use something like Partition Magic to create another partition on it to install WinXP to on that hard drive instead of the second hard drive, that way you don't have to worry about all the stuff on it.Originally posted by heartsfan

First of all, how big are both your hard drives? Is installing WinXP on a separate partition of the first hard drive out of the question?

C: Drive - 7gb (Old - 1997! - Slow!)
D: Drive - 80gb 7200rpm

If the first hard drive is pretty big, you could use something like Partition Magic to create another partition on it to install WinXP to on that hard drive instead of the second hard drive, that way you don't have to worry about all the stuff on it.

Can I do this with my D: Drive?
Can I make a Partition on D: Drive and make it my E: Drive then install Windows XP on the E: Drive?

I use a lot of old games as well - some DOS and I have heard that XP can't run a lot of older games!!! Maybe someone can tell me differently though!!;)
So keeping Windows 98SE would be the only option!

xp will run all windows 98 games but can have problams with older dos games and yes if you got partition magic you can partition the new 80gb drive in to 3 then move the win98 to the first partition put xp on the second and data on the last then do away with the old drive to do this use drive image witch is in partition magic to image the c drive on to the d drive then remove the c drive and boot with the partition magic rescue disks you make to make the new drive activ

Since you have Windows 98SE, I'd keep it. It could come in handy. Sometimes the OS Compatibility feature doesn't work as advertised.

You can partition your 80GB hard drive. It probably would be easier to install XP to a new E. The situation will work just fine.

I made a new partition out of Drive D:

Installed Windows XP Pro!!!

EXCELLENT!

What can I say .........
Look what I've been missing all these months!

XP is great apart from 1 annoyance:

Every window I open up defaults full size!
