hi guys
I installed XP on my system and successfully running.
daily, I got a message saying "YOU HAVE n DAYS REMAINING TO ACTIVATE" where n stands for number of days left.
does it mean that once the day become zero, I could no longer use XP?
Is there away to disable this message and install SP1?
Please help. thanks. Henry

That is exactly what that message means. You can activate via the internet or over the phone.
It's painless to activate it.

Very painless...!! I just did one online and it was so easy it was scary! I clicked activate online, it asked me if I wanted to register it, I said "no' and it said, Done - Thanks for buying MS.... It took about 5 seconds to complete.

Remember also that "activation" and "registration" are two very different things; activation is mandatory and registration is optional.
As noted, activation only takes a few seconds online.

Out here, I did not have an online option, so I had to activate by phone (toll free). I must say the people at the MS activation centre were the epitome of helpfulness.

I've activated both ways. By phone it takes longer and it's pretty boring but it's painless too.

I hate Microsoft Activation...its crap and pointless...it'll never stop cracks etc....because if they can write it, then someone else can circumvent it...they should just realise that pirates will always exist, theres no getting past it. and in all honesty i say good luck to them...theyve saved me plenty of money...
And the fact that you can only activate twice is a major letdown. i regularly port HDD's to different PC's and have t se my (pirated) copy of Win98...
XP is a crap OS anyway...dont bother

FYI,
You can fix your typos by using edit, no need to post twice. Second, discussing or admiting to have cracked/burned copies of software you did not purchase is not permitted here.

I've activated my XP numerous times. By phone and the internet with no problems whatsoever.

Your post does not relate to the matter at hand, which is "what the activation message means". Quite frankly, we don't care about what you think of XP, or Microsoft's anti-piracy stance - I would urge you to read the FAQ (http://forum.pcmech.com/misc.php?s=&action=faq) and see that we take a tough stance towards piracy and discussions of piracy. If you find the software as crappy then perhaps you shouldn't be out there searching for cracks and warez.
The thread is open in the hope that it will not degenerate to something that will not be allowed on this forum, and in the hope that the thread starter, or others will get the answer (if they havent already.

While not actually explaining what product activation is, ive merely added my opinion to the thread which is to say that i dont think its effective and they shouldn't have bothered with the activation process, especially when it makes it difficult for users who port HDD's or test components, as it resets itself, and also adding the thought that i think there are many people out there who's sole purpose is to circumvent these measures, and subsequent to that, i've also told of my gratefullness to them, a)for being subversive in the first place and b)saving me money.
I've posted no crack/hack/product key or otherwise, and have merely expressed an opinion. And if you are not prepared to listen to my opinion or acknowledge it, then i see that childish behaviour as a complete contradiction to the "American Dream" (said with excess sarcasm) because you're trying to supress my view because you're worried about those beaurocratic pigs over at Microsoft who charge around the place like the proverbial bullies they are, pricing XP and MSOFFICE at ridiculous prices, thinking they can run the software world. And can you honestly tell me you OWN a liscence to every piece of software on you computer? Can anyone? I dont think so...

Try again... read the FAQ (http://forum.pcmech.com/misc.php?s=&action=faq) and look at your statements;

Only an implication of piracy... but lets continue;

Seems to me outright admission of the fact that you're using a pirated copy of which, such discussion is not allowed here, nor is your attitude towards the staff that run it as I can assure you, the members don't appreciate it either.
