Coudl someone please tell me how to transfer old data from a broken hard drive to one that's working?

The thing is that my hard drive died a while back and it contained a few files that I need and i heard that you can transfer files back from a old hard drive, if it isn't broken too badly, to a newer one. How would I go about doing this?

THe only thing I know is to put the jumper into the right position but after that I'm quite lost as to what to do. Also does how I connect my 2 hard drives , one new and one old, to the IDE cable matter?

Thanks for your help once more. Really appreicate it!

Just how broken is the drive... if it's to the point where it can't be detected by the BIOS... the only way to get data would be to send it to a data recovery $ervice... big bucks for that.

Well it's not that bad, at least I don't thing so.

It can be detected is mainly what I'm trying to say.
