Im going to buy a new computer soon and I want to get good security but I dont want to go out and buy a program becaus they are expensive and I have seen many posts talking free AV's and firewalls that do the job. I wanted to see if anyone had some suggestions.

AVG anti-virus (http://www.grisoft.com/us/us_dwnl7.php)
Sygate Personal firewall (http://smb.sygate.com/buy/download_buy.htm)
Kerio Personal firewall (http://www.kerio.com/kpf_home.html)

Personally, I use AVG and until I got a router Sygate. Both worked out really good for me.

i have a linksys router w/ built-in firewall plus zonealarm and just recently have been using AVG.
I used to have no virus scanner for about 15 days! I installed AVG and found 3 viruses/worms... ahhh. Works great for me now... i recommend it, it has free updates and all the little extras so u can't go wrong with that.
Haven't heard too much about housecall but AVG is the complete package so it will take care of anything thrown at you.

Housecall is free online virus scan and is good for a secondary virus scanner for those times when you want a second opinion. I would recommend having an AV that resides on your system.
Everybody wants good and free. If you find one, get it now. Quite often, software publishers use the free to introduce their products. The free version disappears. If you have it, it may still work!
As for Housecalls, it's about as good as you're going to get for FREE! There are not update charges, etc. How good it works? It's found viruses on my computer and removed them. It's found viruses on my friends' computer and couldn't remove them!

thats what i thought housecall was Jimmie... i would have to agree with Ray that you should definately have a Virus Scanner on your computer at all times and not rely strictly on an online VS. What if you forget to go everyday or even everyweek! then what? it only takes a moment of unprotection to get screwed over by a virus!

Is the free AVG just a scanner or does it monitor action on the computer 24/7? And what do they mean by "IT CAN NOT BE INSTALLED IN ANY NETWORKED ENVIRONMENT!". The site isint very clear on that. But if I can find a place that sells panda ill pay the 45$.

it runs 24/7 and i saw on the site where u can get the networked versions for free... i think they called 'em trial version or maybe they are just for the business not home... i don't know but i do remember saying you can get one of the versions for your networked computer.... hell my free home version is on a network computer and works fine! found 3 viruses, removed them, and is scheduled to scan every night (as well as run all day) and does. works for me.

The trial version of 7.0 has a experation date. What i realy wanted to know is do they say it wont work on a networked envirement(I doubt that) or they wont allow you too and what is a networked inviroment, is a computer connected to the internet through a router a networked enviroment?
The free AVG 6 will *work* on a network, it's just not *licensed* for network use. It's a full time monitor and email scanner.
