I have 56k external modem wth a USB connection. My problem is that I have windows XP on my CPU and after checking the manafacturers web site I discovered they only have drivers for 98 and older. Is there some way I can still make this modem work under XP or am I just Sh*t out of luck?

There`s a good chance XP will have the drivers for your modem. If not, try the generic drivers, I`ve had some luck with them.

What make\model is it? If it is USB it should be fairly recent.

And just another thing, don`t automatically accept 2000\XP driver choice when they search a media source. (CD, floppy, etc) I`ve found that a lot of times a better choice is avaliable but the OS will choose the wrong driver because it is digitally signed by M$.

Example, I recently installed audio drivers from a CD and W2k wanted the 9x\me drivers (digitally signed) but the CD had W2k drivers which weren`t.

You can look at the modem manufacture's web site for updated drivers. I'm in the process of going from Win 98.2 to XP Pro, but my modem is a Win 95/98 modem and was made before XP was even out. I found the complete installation / software / drivers for XP online.

You are out of luck unless Zoom has drivers for it - Boca was bought out.

Spend the $40 for a US Robotics 2977 or 2976 PCI modem - its worth it, it's a true hardware modem.

How about a PCMCIA modem?

Modems are dirt cheap, I see PCMCIA modems on rebate deals for $10. I wouldn't spend a lot of time trying to beat that old modem into submission. :)

I had a similar problem with an Action Tech 56KBS internal modem on an XP Pro upgrade. XP didn't like the 95/98 drivers and there are no XP drivers available so I tried the NT4 drivers in the CDRom and they work fine.
Worth a try if there are NT drivers on your CD.
Good Luck

There won't be NT drivers for a USB modem - NT doesn't support USB.
