Do you have to have an ISP for a cable modem, or would just having the cable provider work?

the cable co will use the mac address of the modem and the ip address of your router, or nic if you do not use a router

I have Comcast Cable fot high-speed internet, and they are my ISP. So to answer your question your cable provider ends up being your ISP. You can also sign up for plans with AOL and MSN (for an additional fee of course) where you bring your own access and you get to use all of their services but the cable company is still your ISP.
