ok, so I was all proud of myself
got me a router and hooked it up to comp #1 with winME.
worked fine all last night.
today I can a cat5 cable to comp #2 with win98.
I reset the IP in #2 as I was supposed to, both comps ran fine for a bit, both connected to the net. then both slowed down and then neither would connect to the net.
only way i could fix it was to reset the router, reset the whole thing up in comp #1, then both worked
then both crapped.
so i did the reset thing all over again, left comp #2 off and ran here for help.
any ideas?? pleeeease, this is driving me nuts... works fine and for no apparent reason just dies.

edit: ... now the darn thing loses the connection even when I am just using the main comp, have to keep resetting the router ( without re-setting it, it wont let me get to the control panel to run the wizard to redo my settings, which allows me to connect to the net again...for a little while
before it drops the connection again)
edit: ok...got hold of the tech guy at d-link, described the prob, he says once I have got connected there is no reason I should get disconnected so the router is fried.
after one day of use.
and about 7 hours fighting with it.
lesson learned: NEVER BUT A STINKING D-LINK PRODUCT !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What about a firmware update? I had allot of the same problems with my netgear.

I upgraded firmware 3 times to fix it. The 3 upgrade was a Beta firmware and it is working just fine now. But i was having the same type of disconnects and had to reboot the router to get into the admin section of the router. I was also having slow speeds at time until i would reboot.

I don't know about you but I have been installing many Dlink Routers on my friends comps and they run well without any problem. Yes, I once installed it to a Win ME and I encoutered a lil bit headaches until I told my friend to upgrade his OS to Win XP now he never bothers me anymore.

I am by no means the best resource here, but maybe I can lead you in a direction you had not thought of...... I just had a similar problem and it was solved by checking the ip address's of each machine. It turned out one of the boxes (3) was a set up so as to force a bad ip address on the others. The result was that reseting the router would enable a connection for a time, but when the license was renewed the connection was lost.

Thiis is my wifes realm of knowledge so I can not be more clear, all I kow is that after checking ipconfig in a dos window we were able to see the bad ip's and then it was just a matter of tracking down who was making the change.

yes i updated the firmware ( twice)
I kept checking the IP addy every time it died and it was ok.
the tech I talked to told me that seeing as I had both machines connected and running at one point, that it must be the router that is toast. or maybe he couyldn't be bothered to help me.
you say ME is a pain, is there any particular thing that i should fix or watch out for on my ME machine, i am using the ME as server and 98 as client, although I never got as far as setting the network up, I was only at the point of sharing the connection when I ran into this prob od losing the connection. Even with the 98 machine off and unhooked the ME kept losing the connection.
thanks for all your help everyone !!
I am taking this sucker back and getting a Linskys BEFSR41, I have heard good things about them.
this d-link was about $30 cheaper than any other router, guess I got what I paid for.

Don't diss D-Link over a bad experience with ONE item. I've seen defective equipment from just about every manufacturer under the sun.
