View Full Version : my next stupid question.............
ok, now that i am a happy guy and have my router working well with my 2 comps ( winME and win98) can someone tell me how ( or send me a link) to network them. I really have no idea about this, do i need software? do i just change some settings?
I have browsed several home networking sites and they have pretty much just left me confused ( so what else is new? LOL)
thanks

It sounds like you've already networked the computers and now just need to share some files and stuff.
I think in win98 you have to turn on file sharing, it'll be under the network properties area somewhere. Sorry I can't be more specific but it's been ages since I used win98. Then it's a matter of right-clicking folders and resources, going to properties and then the sharing tab and setting it to shared.
To chat with each other over the network, you can use netmeeting, or do a google search for many similar programs.
To play games againts each other you usually need to find out the IP addresses of the two computers. Go to start menu->Run and type winipcfg and it will tell you there.
hi, thnaks for the reply matt.
ya I have the 2 comps sharing the internet connection, just need to share folders and files etc. I'll try what you said thanks

ok.. step by step instructions...
1. open the network properties dialog box (Start>Settings>Control Panel>Network) on both computers.
2. Click on the Identification Tab. Make sure both computers have the same thing under Workgroup. (Doesn't matter what it is, as long as it is exactly the same on both machines..
3. make sure they both have different names. (agains, doesn't matter what you choose.. but make it something logical, i.e. call one bedroom and one office.
(the computer description doesn't matter one bit.
4. click back on the Configuration tab and then click the File and print Sharing button.
Select 'I want to be able to give others access to my files'
and if you want to share the printer attached to that computer select 'I want to be able to share my printers with other users.'
5. click ok, the click ok again to exit the network properties dialog box. It will install the new properties and ask you to restart the computer.. say 'yes' (or click it rather)
when the computers restart you have them networked, but you now have to give them folders to share. I would recommend creating a folder on each called the "share" folder on the c drive.. or you can select any folder... it's up to you. Just right click on it and select sharing, and enable it.
(note... it's not a good idea to share the entire 'c:' drive.
then all you have to do is click on "network neighborhood" on the win98 machine or "my Network Places" on the win Me machine and you can see each others files..
Let me know if you need help sharing a printer.. or if these steps don't work..
Good Luck!

Just a small addition to yellohut's excellent instructions. If you are sharing a printer that is hooked to a PC you may have to install it on the second PC in addition to enabling sharing on the PC it is connected to.
Chas
wow ty so much yellohut.
however one prob..
I dd as you said and the win98 machine shows both computers in network neighbourhood but the ME machine doesnt show either of them
I tried clicking on "entire neighbourhood" and the comp just hung up , I clicked ctrl/alt/del and it showed Network Places as "not responding".
any ideas.
also do i need to change the setting for "primary netowrk log on"? both are set to " windows log on" right now.
thanks again !!
further...........
If I search the Network places/whole netowrk on the ME, i can see my ME comp but not the 98 comp.
with the 98 comp i can see both comps
wondering , with the ME, there is an " add network place" Icon, I checked it out and it asks me to type in the place i want to add. I tried typing in the name of the other computer ( the name I gave it when setting it up) but that didnt work.
hmmmmmmmmmmmm

Someone else will need to step in here to confirm, but I had a similar prob w/ my 98se & XP connection. It boiled down to needing to add a different protocol to the network adapters. I was told to install NetBEUI, and it did the trick.
However, since you have a router it sounds like you mebbe have an "on all the time" internet connection. I think there may be security issues with using NetBEUI. If your router has a firewall, then I think that makes it safe to use, but again someone else should clarify...

Installing NetBEUI is for when you are sharing one of the computer's internet connection.. so that does not apply here becuase they are both connected to the high-speed modem through the router... all that needs to be installed in TCP/IP.. which it already is..
First, Make sure the win98 is sharing something (a folder or directrory).
You may want to try changing both to "client for Microsoft Networks" as the primary logon. It will ask you to restart the computer, and then prompt you for a password after it reboots, but just press "ok" ... you don't need to enter a password.
I hope this helps.

My PC's networked thru a router are both using Client for Microsoft networks as Yellowhut pointed out.
Here is a link that might help. Check the last post by LawyerRon. It has a comment concerning the use of Netbuei and that it isn't recommended which kov-ice commented on. It also contains a link to a site that gives step by step instructions.

Do you have any third party software like Norton Internet Securities on the Win Me machine?
