I just built my second computer. I put windows 98 on it for now and was running some test. I have a USB netgear wireless receiver for the internet. I put it in one of the USB ports that are on the front of the case to test it out. It worked fine and the internet came up without any problem. However, when I try to move the receiver to any other USB port I can't connect to the internet. The two in the back were preattached to the mobo. I can only use the one that I originally set up the internet with. I've tried reloading drivers after it was attached to the rear with no luck. I tried add new hardware, nothing. The computer seems to know that it is there but will not run from the rear USB ports. The only thing that has come to mind now but I've yet to try, is perhaps windows is not recognizing the mobo's USB ports. I do remember seeing an unknown device listed for a PCI USB device. I ignored it because the only PCI device I have on the computer is a graphics card. I can't check this out until the morning though. Any thoughts?

Hey Karnevil9, Whats up.
You may have already checked this, but just in case you hav'nt. Try going into the BIOS and seeing if those USB ports are enabled or disabled. If it's a new motherboard, they usualy come already enabled, but there a chance they mite of got put on diabled by mistake. But if it's a used motherboard, be careful, they might be disabled for a reason. If you do find that they need to be enabled and it's a used motherboard, try some usb device in it first that your not worryed about lossing. Ulysses

Thanks for the reply. I had windows 98 installed at the time. I added an extra 512mb of ram to the system for a total of one gig. The windows 98 started me giving me all types of boot up problems. I checked each stick and they were both good. I dumped the 98 and install windows 2000 pro. When I did the system worked fine, and the usb ports started to work. Maybe the installation was bad, or perhaps windows 98 couldn't handle the soltek mobo's drivers. I don't know but it works now.

Thanks Bailey. I had a feeling it was the extra ram. I was relieved too. At first I thought it was bad ram or mobo ram slot, but the symptoms didn't seem to fit. I was going to partition the drive to put 98 on it just for some old games for my son, but I don't need and I am going to give him the old dell pentium II computer with 98 on it, so that should keep him happy.

You just need to limit the VCACHE in W98 to 512mb, and it'll work fine with additional memory.

Thanks gunrunnerjohn. I may put it on there yet.
