What is the average case size for retail motherboards, such as an alienware or sony vaio. I am planning on putting my old comp in one since my current one looks ugly.
All motherboards are produced in standard ATX form - You shouldnt have any problem.

Is your old computer a home built or a store bought name brand computer? Some name brand computers use proprietary motherboards that don't fit in standard ATX cases. Some use a riser or daughter board for PCI and memory slots and will only fit and work with the case they came in.

although with a full tower u do have alot more options. IT may not fit but if it doesnt u can always drill new holes to mount the mother board on. Im not sure the size the hole needs to be off the top of my head. Try it on like a sheet of wood first and make sure the screw will fit tight.
