I have a "StartUp Monitor" program that I use to tell me when anything is attempting to put itself into my start up registry/menu/whateveritis.

I got a "StartUp Monitor Warning" that I don't understand. The only thing I downloaded was a PC-Cilin update, but this is what it said:

"Start Up Monitor Warning
The program Register OCX has registered the executable regsvr32.exe/msdxm.ocx to run at system start up.

Do you wish to allow this change?"

I clicked "No" because I am really not sure WHERE this came from.

Anybody know what that is?

I checked the system startup menu (start>run>msconfig) and I don't see anything in there like this-checked or unchecked.

IF I want/need this to start up--how do I find it again?

Thanx!

msdxm.ocx is supposed to be the Windows Media Player control. I don't know why it would be in the registry running at startup, though. Have you scanned your system for virii?

Yes, I scanned before I posted with AVG6.0 and PC-Cilin. Nothing found.

I was reading about the new RCP virus and check to see if the patch was installed on my pc-and it was July 12, 2003. But I wanted to DL some other stuff from Microsoft Update--I started the DL-lost my connection-now I've been back about 4 times and everytime I go to scan for updates it stops responding and all my MSN Explorer windows stop responding also. so I have to shut down all the windows and relog in to MSN.

I don't know if that's related anyhow or what, but something doesn't seem quite right.

Any thoughts?

PS MSN Explorer seems to be working fine as long as I don't try to scan for updates at windows update.

UPDATE: Symantec states:

"The worm also attempts to perform a Denial of Service (DoS) on Windows Update. This is an attempt to prevent you from applying a patch on your computer against the DCOM RPC vulnerability."

I haven't recieved a "Denial of Service" but all my MSN Explorer windows "Not Responding" once I click scan.

Windows update history showed the msblast patch was DLed on 7/12/03.

Anybody?

MS servers are probably overloaded with update requests to fix the RPC hole. Alot of people are scared and trying to download the patch.

Why would that freeze up ALL of my MSN Explorer windows?

Correction: the msblast patch was install on 7/ 19 /2003--not on the 12th. Still plenty early enough.
