Tried to speed up a fast connection..got grief

While I was upgrading my AdAware that Sarge brought our attention to.. at the Geek site, I cleverly downloaded a program from their main page that was " Robust Internet Speedup ..etc ". After I installed and rebooted, I could not get on the internet. Once I could ping the router, then 2nd attempt ..not. I checked winipcfg ( Windows 98 SE) and it had set my setting from the 192.168.0.1 to 169. etc. When I tried to release and renew, the renew hung up. When I tried to open the router config, it would not let me get there.. just said done, and stopped. Next time I tried winipcfg, it froze. I ran Norton AV , the The Cleaner, and tried Regrestore.. nothing worked. Machine would not shut down.. had to reboot, go into Safe Mode and then shut down. Yried reloading internet protocol and network adapter drivers.. no help. Right now I am doing an over-the -top Win 98 install.
Machine WAS working perfectly, and then I got greedy for more speed on my cable connection. Question: what did that program load into my registry that I can't find?

Reloading Windows did nothing. When the puter boots, a message shows after the splash screen that says:
" C: Rem - By Windows 98 network - C:]Windows\netstart "
No matter what I try I can not even reload the network adapter , etc . Any idea how to correct this?
I swear the way the computer hangs and slows down, etc, it feels like a virus, but scan of NAV and trojan hunter says no. I hate to.. but I am thinking of reformatting and reloading. Any ideas?Thanks

You will probably need to reload the TCP/IP and then run SpyBot Search and Destroy.
These so called Internet Connection Speed up programs are spyware, BS, or both. The only way you can speed up your connection is to run the higest quality cable from your computer directly to the ISP servers and then unlock the connection at the server.

I do believe that most of those are just garbage spyware and even if they worked they are for dial up anyways. Go to a site like speedguide.net or dslreports.net after you get your PC back up to snuff and just follow their tweaking guides to speed up you internet surfing....They show U right where in the registry to do the tweaking yourself, and I know it did wonders for my speeds...

I had already reloaded tcp/ip. I did rerun Spybot and AdAware.
They removed a few ) I had run them just before downloading, and I ran the new version of AdAware just after, and now I still had 7 from the one site.
All they did was to get me one more line of the " C; Rem - By Windows 98 Network - C: \Windows \net start.
After removing ndis2 I was able to reload the network adapter. It shows in winipcfg but IP address is 169. etc. Still hangs when I try to release and renew. Then the next time I try winipcfg from " run" it tries the hourglass for 10 seconds, then then just returns to plain cursor. I will try the same thing tomorrow AM then surrender and reformat. What a goof.
Okay on " can't speed up the connection " .. but what do you mean by " unlock the connection at the server "

ktkendall- I recall one of your posts that said the tweaking did speed up your cable connection a lot. That was what made me consider this download. I guess I picked the wrong one. I was looking for something like that. I WILL go ro speedguide.net and dslreports.net when I get this fixed.
Now...back to trying to repair....

Well, I could not repair. I had to reformat and reload. I guess I will NOT be downloading anything I have not heard recomendations about. Thanks Roy

I have two PC's behind a router. One with XP and other with WIN98. WIN98 was much slower. I ran the download test at www.pcpitstop.com and used their recommended download and it got the WIN98 PC on par with the XP one. Only thing it changed was the receive buffer.
