I've been noticeing that my floppy drive starts on its own. I mean that it sounds like its trying to read a floppy, but I havn't clicked on the A drive or even put in a floppy disk. I've also noticed my hdd spinning and the led flashing like when I open a program, but it does it when I'm not even at my computer.
Does anyone know whats wrong? I checked for ad-ware, viruses, and trojans but found nothing.

Some antivirus programs will try to access the floppy even if there is no disk inserted. All versions of windows will make the HD light blink but it's not clear to me if you mean "blink" or if it stays on for longer...

I mean that my hdd sounds like its being accessed. Like when you open a new program and you hear the hard drive working and the hdd led comes on showing that the hdd is being used.

I just did a quick look for it but didn't find it: there is a little utility I found at PCWorld about a year or so ago that monitored all HD activity and would report what accessed any / all HDs in your system. Maybe you will have better luck in finding it. In the mean time, I'll see if I can find it in my "old" files CDs...

You're saying your HDD is accessed when you open explorer? That seems somewhat normal. If you have 2000 or xp. Do ctrl+alt+delete and see what what is using cpu in the processes. When does it try to access the floppy? When you open my computer?

Do you have the Indexing Service enabled? Most power users disable or remove it.

Is Windows update set to Automatic. Better to set it to Manual.

Have you set schedules for disk maintenance in Windows?

Have you defragged your HD recently?

The floppy drive being accessed is consistent with the behaviour of some anti-virus programs like NAV.

The floppy drive being accessed is also a symptom of having shortcuts to files on floppy in your Recent menu. This only gets filled up with them if you are in the habit of opening files directly off a floppy instead of copying them to the hard drive first. You can clear this list by right clicking on the taskbar, choose Properties, then Advanced.

Another thing to watch is whether you have MS Office's FindFast working in the background.
