I wanted to know a good way to test how well my firewall protects me. I know symantec has a online scan for security risks but I dont how good it is and id like a 2nd opinion.

Go use the "Sheilds Up" and it will give you a detailed readout of all of your ports and their status.

At the sygatetech scan I got:

"Trying to find out your computer name...

Unable to determine your computer name!

Trying to find out what services you are running...

Unable to detect any running services! "

But I dont know how to use that shields up thing.

Look at it this way, if sygate can't even find your computer, then nobody else is either, totally safe.

The Shields Up test is simple. Just go to the site listed above, click on the Shields Up links until you get to the page that says "Shields Up!!" and greetings at the top, and then click the "Common Ports" button midway down the page (apparently the "All Service Ports" scan isn't working right now).

It will try to connect to various ports on your PC, which your firewall should block. You will get a summary of your system when the test is complete. It is very useful, and the only test I have ever used.

Another place you might want to try is over at www.blackcode.com. They have a pretty good scan, but it will take some time, so try it only on a cable or other broadband connection. The scan is located in the Services Menu at the top of the page.

BTW, I get the same message as ghost2003 on Shields Up!! and in the Sygate scan as well. Running ZA Pro 4.0.123.012 at full stealth mode.

I tested a unprotected computer with shields up and sygatetech. The tests said I was stealth! Could that be my router?

Yep.

I thought the thing just closed ports.

To the outside world, your computer doesn't exist behind a router because of the network address translation.

Just a few days ago I was trying to have symantec scan my computer and they couldn't find it. I just tred 2 of the links provided here, and it looks like my computer is well protected ;)
