When I updated to Sp1 for Win XP, after rebooting all I got was my desktop background. No icons, no start menu, no taskbar etc. This really freaked me out for ages so eventually I did the old ctrl-alt-del and was able to log off my user and log on again which fixed it. Has anybody else come across this? Although not a huge problem, surely that shouldn't happen? I know enough about PCs, which meant I could fix it, but it would really screw up some people who are expecting it to work as is. This happened with 2 different HDD / mobo combinations and on several re-installs of XP.
Does that mean that it happens every time after installing the Service Pack or even at every bootup with the SP installed ?
I haven't had the problem when I installed SP1.
I suggest that you slipstream SP1 into WinXP and do a clean install.

Just with the installation. works just dandy after that.
Hmm. Haven't had that problem but you should slipstream then you don't need to load SP1 afterwards anymore, and the problem should be no more.

Try pressing Ctrl + Alt + Del to get the Task Manager and under the Applications tab, click "New Task" and type EXPLORER. This should get your Start Menu etc. up
